OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 02/23/2026 at about 12:40 a.m., a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 500 block of Westover Road in Big Spring. The vehicle did not stop and the trooper performed a PIT maneuver, causing the vehicle to crash into bushes. Two occupants fled on foot. During the foot pursuit, one of the fleeing people fired shots, striking the trooper. The trooper returned fire and struck the person who had fired. That person died from gunshot wounds. The injured trooper was flown to a hospital in the Lubbock area and is listed in stable condition. The Texas Rangers are investigating with assistance from the Big Spring Police Department and Howard County Sheriff’s Office.
