OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 02/23/2026, San Patricio County deputies and Texas DPS troopers responded to reports of shots fired near County Road 1876 in Odem. Police reported that Jesus P. Ybanez fired at a passing family’s vehicle while a child was inside and while a school bus was unloading students nearby. Deputies returned fire as he continued shooting, and he retreated into a mobile home and barricaded himself. Law enforcement issued repeated commands for him to surrender, then used an armored vehicle to breach the structure after several hours. Officers entered and found Ybanez dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The San Patricio County Criminal Investigation Division and the Texas Rangers are handling the investigation.
