On 02/24/2026, Decatur (Illinois) Police responded to a call for a welfare check just after 11 p.m. for a person reportedly in distress at a residence. Officers spent a significant amount of time engaging with and attempting to de-escalate the situation and called medical personnel (Abbott Ambulance) to assist. Officers determined the person needed medical attention and took them into “non-arrest police custody” for transport to a hospital. According to the department, the individual resisted officers, and force was used to overcome the resistance. After being detained, the person showed signs of respiratory distress. Resuscitative efforts were made, and the individual was transported to a local hospital where they were later pronounced dead. The Illinois State Police has been requested to conduct an independent investigation into the events, including any use of force and custody actions.
