On 02/23/2026, Phoenix police responded to reports that a man was pointing a gun at his daughters near a park at 15th Avenue and Atlanta Avenue. Officers located him, and he rode away on a bicycle before running toward a residence. Police deployed a less lethal tool that did not stop him. Officers then physically engaged him. During the struggle, the firearm discharged as he and an officer fell to the ground. Both were struck. Officers transported the man to a hospital where he died from gunshot wounds. One officer sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was treated and released.
