On 12/20/2025, Springfield police officers responded to the 1100 block of Worcester Street after a 911 call reported a man armed with a knife and exhibiting erratic behavior. Officers encountered Dennis Girard, who was armed with a knife during the encounter. An officer discharged a service weapon, striking Girard. Girard was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hampden District Attorney’s Office is overseeing the investigation and will release findings regarding the use of force when the review is complete.

On 08/16/2025, police responded to an incident on East Wilson Street in Batavia, Illinois, involving an armed individual. During the response, shots were fired by police officers. The individual died from a self inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. Authorities stated the death was ruled a suicide following police gunfire. On 02/28/2025, officers from the Albuquerque Police Department responded to an apartment in northeast Albuquerque after a supervisor at a local hospital called 911 requesting a welfare check on David McElvain, who had called into work but did not show. Officers opened the apartment door during the welfare check. Within seconds, one officer discharged a duty weapon three times, striking McElvain. McElvain was pronounced dead at the scene. The personal representative of McElvain’s estate subsequently filed a wrongful death lawsuit alleging officers entered without a warrant before opening fire. The lawsuit was filed on 01/13/2026 in the 2nd Judicial District Court.

On 02/07/2025, Los Angeles police responded to a motel room in the 10000 block of San Fernando Road after a woman reported she was being held against her will and physically assaulted. Officers encountered Linda Becerra Moran in the motel room. She held a knife and refused to drop it. At a threshold between the room and hallway, an officer discharged a duty weapon, striking Becerra Moran. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition and died several weeks later. The Los Angeles Police Department’s Board of Police Commissioners voted unanimously that the officers’ actions were out of policy.

On 01/28/2025, San Diego police officers were in the area of the Santa Fe Depot in downtown San Diego when gunfire was reported near the train platforms. A 16-year-old boy, identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner as Konoa Wilson, was running from gunshots being fired by another person at the station and emerged onto Kettner Boulevard. Officer Daniel Gold II encountered Wilson as he ran from the gunfire. Officer Gold discharged a duty weapon, striking Wilson twice in the back. Wilson was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The San Diego City Council approved a $30 million settlement with Wilson’s family related to the shooting.
