On 02/24/2026, Baltimore Police Department officers entered a liquor store in the Belair-Edison neighborhood of Baltimore and saw Dwight Hawkins, 37, whom they believed was armed. Officers followed Hawkins after he left the store and repeatedly told him to display his hands. Hawkins ran from officers while holding a handgun, according to police, and officers fired their weapons as he ran nearly face-to-face with a second officer. Hawkins was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries. The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is reviewing the shooting, and the officers who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave. Family members dispute the police account and say Hawkins did not have a weapon nor pose a threat in the manner described by authorities.
