OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 01/24/2026, Sweetwater Police Department officers activated their license plate reader after a stolen truck from Georgia was flagged in the area. Officers attempted to locate and stop the stolen vehicle, but the truck eluded them and pursuit was terminated. Later, authorities received reports that the stolen truck was driving erratically and attempting to force other vehicles off the road. Officers located the truck again and attempted to engage, but the suspect vehicle fled onto Highway 68. Law enforcement lost sight of the stolen vehicle before arriving at a crash scene. The stolen truck had collided head-on with a van containing two occupants, resulting in both vehicles catching fire. Officers attempted to extinguish the flames and rescue occupants. One occupant was removed from the crash and later died, and the second occupant also died. The driver of the stolen truck, who had a felony warrant from Georgia and a stolen firearm in the vehicle, also died in the crash. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is conducting the crash reconstruction investigation. The District Attorney General offered condolences to the families of the victims and noted no additional injuries were reported.
