On 02/25/2026, authorities in Buffalo located the body of Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a 56-year-old Rohingya refugee, after he had been missing since 02/19/2026. Border Patrol agents took Shah Alam into custody following his release on bail from the Erie County Holding Center for immigration-related reasons and later dropped him off at a Tim Hortons 5 miles from his home without notifying his family or attorney. Six days later, Buffalo police found Shah Alam deceased on a downtown street after responding to a report of a dead body. The Erie County Medical Examiner determined his death was health-related. He was completely blind in one eye and mostly blind in the other and could only make out objects a few feet away. Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances and timeframe of events leading to his death following his release from custody.
