OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY : On 02/25/2026, Vestal Police Department officers responded to a report of a person in mental distress at a residence on Sequoia Lane in Vestal. Officers encountered Eslam Ahmed Hegazy, age 38, who was holding a knife and threatening to harm himself. Officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife. During the encounter Hegazy ignored commands, threw a television at officers, raised the knife, and advanced toward them. An officer fired at Hegazy, striking him. Police immediately rendered aid and Hegazy was transported to Wilson Medical Center. He died from his wounds nearly 24 hours later. No officers were reported injured. The New York State Police are conducting an independent investigation, and the case has been referred to the New York State Attorney General’s Office as required under state law.
