On 02/26/2026, Walnut Creek Police Department officers responded around 12:10 a.m. to reports of a person in dark clothing looking into homes and parked vehicles with a flashlight in the area of Alvarado Avenue near Buena Vista Avenue in Walnut Creek, California. Officers located Joaquin Anthony “Tony” Pereya holding what appeared to be a firearm. Officers issued commands to drop the weapon and Pereya did not comply, leading officers to fire at him. The object later was determined to be a pellet gun that resembled a handgun. Pereya died of his injuries. His mother said he had a long history of mental illness and was not legally permitted to buy a firearm. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave while a Contra Costa County District Attorney investigation is underway.
