OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/07/2026 at approximately 3:49 p.m., officers with the Metropolitan Police Department attempted a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Malibu in Northwest Washington. The driver did not stop and continued driving southbound on 16th Street NW. Minutes later, at the intersection of 16th Street NW and L Street NW, the Malibu entered the intersection against a red light and collided with a Toyota Corolla traveling eastbound. The impact caused the Malibu to strike 26-year-old Aaron Marckell Williams, who was walking eastbound in a marked crosswalk with the right of way. Emergency personnel responded and pronounced Williams dead from his injuries.
The crash damaged multiple vehicles stopped at the intersection and injured at least two additional individuals. Police arrested the driver, Santana Matthews, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia charged him with Second Degree Murder while Armed involving a vehicle, Fleeing from Law Enforcement, and related offenses. The Metropolitan Police Department placed the officers involved in the attempted stop on administrative leave pending internal review. The MPD Major Crash Investigations Unit continues to investigate the incident. Williams was not involved in the pursuit and was walking in the crosswalk when he was struck.
