On January 21, 2026, officers responded to an armed robbery at an AT&T store in Elyria involving a Brink’s armored truck, during which the suspect allegedly forced the truck driver at gunpoint and stole cash. Police located the suspect vehicle and initiated a multi-jurisdiction pursuit into North Olmsted, reaching high speeds. Stop sticks were deployed, immobilizing the vehicle. The suspect exited and ran to a nearby apartment complex, where he allegedly took a woman and her four children hostage at gunpoint. Video footage shows the suspect inside the apartment with the family. An Elyria police officer then discharged his firearm, striking the suspect. Officers recovered a firearm believed to belong to the suspect at the scene. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent review of the officer-involved shooting. Police said the suspect’s actions posed a deadly threat to the family.
