On January 21, 2026, officers responded to an armed robbery at an AT&T store in Elyria involving a Brink’s armored truck, during which the man allegedly forced the truck driver at gunpoint and stole cash. Police located the vehicle and initiated a multi-jurisdiction pursuit into North Olmsted, reaching high speeds. Stop sticks were deployed, immobilizing the vehicle. The man exited and ran to a nearby apartment complex, where he allegedly took a woman and her four children hostage at gunpoint. Video footage shows the man inside the apartment with the family. An Elyria police officer then discharged his firearm, striking the man. Officers recovered a firearm believed to belong to the man at the scene. The man was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent review of the officer-involved shooting. Police said the man’s actions posed a deadly threat to the family.
