On January 18, 2026, Washington State Patrol troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle traveling southbound on State Route 509 near Port of Tacoma Road. The driver fled from officers at high speed. The vehicle lost control and collided with a power pole near 21st Street and Pacific Avenue. The front-seat passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and a rear-seat passenger suffered serious injuries and were transported to a hospital. The driver was taken into custody and faces charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, DUI, vehicular homicide, and vehicular assault.
