On 02/26/2026, deputies from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve an outstanding warrant at a home on Riverbrook Trail in Newton County. The man inside barricaded himself, prompting a crisis negotiation and a SWAT response. After several hours, the man sustained an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound just before SWAT entered the residence. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. No law enforcement officers or other civilians were reported harmed. The investigation remains underway.
