On 03/01/2026 at approximately 12:22 a.m., Howard County Police Department officers responded to the Patuxent Commons apartment building in the 6400 block of Freetown Road in Columbia, Maryland after receiving a 911 call reporting that a man was threatening to harm himself. Officers located 25-year-old Alexander Lamorie outside the building holding a knife. Police said Lamorie walked toward officers and ignored repeated commands to drop the knife. Officers Joel Rodriguez, Cody Bostic, and PFC Joseph Riebau fired their weapons, striking Lamorie. He died at the scene. Lamorie was a resident of the Patuxent Commons building and had autism, according to statements from his family, who said they were shocked and seeking answers about the circumstances of the encounter.
The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division opened an investigation into the fatal police shooting. Authorities said all three officers were assigned to the Howard County Police Department Field Operations Command and were wearing body-worn cameras that recorded the incident.
