On 02/27/2026, a deputy from the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 83 south of Wilton after observing a possibly impaired driver around 9:30 a.m. The driver complied with the deputy’s request to exit his vehicle. Once outside the vehicle, the man produced a handgun and sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Emergency responders, including additional law enforcement, the North Dakota Highway Patrol, and Wilton Ambulance, administered life-saving measures at the scene and transported the man to a Bismarck hospital, where he later died from his injuries. No shots were fired by law enforcement in this incident. The Burleigh County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
