On 02/28/2026, officers from the San Luis Obispo Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man shouting aggressively and waving an object near the 900 block of El Capitan Way. Officers located the man near Poinsettia Street and Bluebell Way actively yelling and holding the object that to police looked like a firearm. An officer confronted the threat and discharged their service weapon, striking the man once. Despite life-saving efforts, he died at the scene. Investigators later determined that the firearm was a replica. No officers or other community members were injured. The subject’s identity is being withheld pending next-of-kin notifications, and the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
