On 02/27/2026, Swansea police officers were alerted to a white Infiniti G37 connected to a homicide investigation in nearby Cranston, Rhode Island. Around 12:15 a.m., the vehicle traveled westbound on Route 6 at a very high rate of speed and crashed into a blue Subaru Ascent that was crossing Route 6 from Route 136. The Subaru was driven by James Carcasi of Bristol, Rhode Island, with his wife, 56-year-old Carolyn Carcasi, riding as a passenger. The violent impact caused the Subaru to burst into flames. Emergency responders and bystanders attempted to put out the fire, but both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said the Infiniti was driven by 28-year-old Demitri Sousa of Seekonk, who had allegedly shot and killed a coworker earlier that night in Cranston and was driving away from that homicide when the crash occurred. Sousa survived the crash with serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. Investigators said Swansea police had been notified to watch for the vehicle connected to the Rhode Island homicide, but officers were not actively pursuing it at the moment the collision occurred. The crash killed the married couple and became part of the broader investigation spanning Rhode Island and Massachusetts into the earlier shooting death of 35-year-old Javon Lawson.
