On 03/03/2026, Coventry police responded to a disturbance on Anthony Street where police said Derek Decosta forced three people into a vehicle at knifepoint. Police stopped the vehicle on Washington Street. The driver backed into a Coventry police cruiser, damaging it. The three people exited the vehicle during that encounter. Police chased the vehicle. Decosta drove to Main Street and crashed into a home at 1044 Main Street. Emergency crews transported him to Kent County Hospital, where he died. No one inside the home was injured, though residents were displaced.
