OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 02/27/2026, Hartford police responded after a family member called 911 requesting medical help for Steven Jones, who had not taken his psychiatric medication and had injured himself while holding a knife. Officers confronted him on Blue Hills Avenue and repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife while attempting to de-escalate; one officer deployed a Taser, which did not stop him. Police video shows Jones walking toward officers with the knife before Officer Joseph Magnano, who had just arrived, fired nine shots, striking him. Jones was transported to Saint Francis Hospital, where he died days later. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. Family members and attorney Ben Crump criticized the shooting, saying Jones needed medical help, not lethal force, while investigations by the Connecticut Inspector General and other authorities remain ongoing.
