OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 03/03/2026, Powder Springs police responded around 9:00 p.m. to a mental health-related call at a shopping plaza in the 3000 block of New Macland Road. Officers spent about an hour engaging with 34-year-old Gustavo Guimaraes of Acworth in the parking lot of a Publix grocery store. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, during the interaction Guimaraes pulled out a handgun, and officers opened fire, striking him multiple times. Paramedics transported Guimaraes to a hospital, where he died. Witness video captured employees reacting to the gunfire and medics treating him in the parking lot. The GBI is leading the investigation and will submit its findings to the Cobb County District Attorney for review.
