On 03/06/2026, a Twiggs County deputy attempted a traffic stop on the eastbound Interstate 16 ramp near Sgoda Road after learning a vehicle parked at a closed gas station did not have valid insurance. The driver initially stopped, then drove away at high speed, and deputies chased the vehicle onto I-16, reaching speeds of about 130 miles per hour. The pursuit continued through Laurens County, where deputies attempted spike strips and later a PIT maneuver. During the chase, authorities said the driver fired multiple rounds at deputies’ vehicles and continued eastbound. The pursuit entered Treutlen County, where the driver lost control for unknown reasons, left the roadway, struck several trees, and overturned near mile marker 70. The driver was ejected and taken into custody with life-threatening injuries. The front seat passenger was trapped inside and died from injuries.
