On 03/05/2026, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded around 7:00 a.m. to reports of a suspicious person near Northeast 35th Court and Northeast Fifth Avenue in Oakland Park. Deputies encountered 39-year-old Deavon Ray McGauley, who had a machete. According to authorities, during the encounter McGauley attacked deputies with the machete, and deputies opened fire, striking him. Oakland Park Fire Rescue transported him to Broward Health Medical Center, where he died. No deputies were injured. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating, and BSO homicide and internal affairs units are conducting reviews.
