On 02/27/2026, Swansea police officers observed a white Infiniti G37 traveling westbound on Route 6 at a very high rate of speed shortly after 12:15 a.m. Moments later the vehicle crashed into the side of a blue Subaru Ascent that was traveling southbound on Route 136 at the intersection. The Subaru was driven by 53-year-old James Carcasi of Bristol, Rhode Island, with his wife Carolyn Carcasi as a passenger. The impact caused catastrophic damage and the Subaru became fully engulfed in flames. First responders and bystanders attempted to extinguish the fire but both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said the driver of the Infiniti, 28-year-old Demitri Sousa of Seekonk, had allegedly shot and killed a coworker hours earlier in Cranston, Rhode Island and was fleeing that homicide when the crash occurred. Sousa survived with serious injuries and was transported to a hospital. Authorities said Swansea police had been alerted to look for the vehicle connected to the Rhode Island homicide but were not actively pursuing it at the moment of the crash. The collision killed the married couple instantly and became part of a broader investigation spanning Rhode Island and Massachusetts involving the earlier shooting death of 35-year-old Javon Lawson.
