OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 03/08/2026, Denton police responded around 12:10 p.m. to welfare calls about an adult man who appeared intoxicated at the Denton Tennis and Pickleball Center in the 1100 block of Riney Road. Officers found the man on the north side of the courts after he climbed onto a fence while holding a metal rod. Police said he told officers they would have to kill him and threatened them with the object. Officers attempted verbal de-escalation. Police said the man climbed down and moved toward officers while still holding the metal rod. One officer deployed a Taser, which struck him but was ineffective. A second officer then fired multiple shots, striking him. Medics transported him to a hospital where he died. The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation, and the officer who fired was placed on administrative leave.
