OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 03/09/2026, Chicago police attempted to stop a white Mercedes around 5:30 p.m. in the 800 block of North Homan Avenue that officers said was possibly connected to an earlier shooting. Police followed the vehicle after the driver continued driving. Investigators said the driver struck a woman crossing the street, then crashed into a CTA bus and an unmarked Chicago police vehicle. Officers surrounded the car, broke windows, and pulled the driver out as they attempted to detain him. During the struggle, an officer fired multiple shots, striking Marcus Young, 29. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died. Two officers were treated for minor injuries, and the woman struck by the vehicle was hospitalized with a lower-body injury and listed in good condition. Family members said Young had stopped for food and was trying to leave when officers approached and said he did not fire a weapon. COPA is investigating and video reviewed by media shows officers surrounding the car before shots were fired.
