OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 03/10/2026, Shawano County deputies responded around 1:30 a.m. to a disturbance at a residence on the 2300 block of State Highway 22 in Green Valley. Jonathan L. Lupe, 38, was inside the home and locked himself in a bathroom, telling deputies he had a gun. Deputies attempted less-lethal force, which was ineffective. According to authorities, Lupe then moved toward deputies holding what they believed to be a firearm. Deputy Cole Vande Hei opened fire, striking him. Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures and transported him to a hospital, where he died. Investigators later determined the object he was holding was a .177 caliber Crosman pellet gun. The shooting was captured on body cameras. The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation and will submit findings to the Shawano County District Attorney.
