On 03/10/2026, Riverton police conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 15 just south of Bangerter Highway in Draper for possible narcotics activity. Officers observed Branden Scott Markham, who was sitting in the passenger seat, with a gun and ordered him to surrender it. Police said he refused, and an altercation occurred outside the vehicle. During the altercation, an officer shot Markham. He was airlifted to a hospital and died the next day. Police detained the driver, Shawn Michael Shalosky, and placed the involved officer on administrative leave.
