OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 03/13/2026, Calcasieu Parish deputies responded around 9 a.m. to a disturbance at a home on Miller Avenue near the Calcasieu River. Deputies said Kristopher Hanks went inside the residence and refused to come out or allow others inside to leave, and officers treated the situation as a possible hostage incident involving two juveniles and an elderly person. Negotiators worked for several hours. Authorities said Hanks later exited the home armed with a handgun and fired a shot. Deputies escorted the other occupants out and then shot him when he emerged again with the gun. He died at the location. Louisiana State Police were called to investigate the deputy-involved shooting.
