On 03/16/2026, San Diego police contacted a man inside a vehicle around 3 a.m. in the 5000 block of Newport Avenue in the Ocean Beach neighborhood. During the detention, officers attempted to handcuff him after he became combative. The man produced a handgun and shot himself. Officers requested paramedics, but he was pronounced dead. Police did not fire their weapons and reported minor injuries while attempting to restrain him.
