On 03/19/2026, San Antonio police identified a vehicle with mismatched license plates and attempted a traffic stop. The driver continued driving and police escalated a pursuit that moved across multiple parts of the city with aerial support. The driver stopped at a gas station near East Rampart Drive and McCullough Avenue and attempted to run. Police detained him, placed him in handcuffs, and secured him in the back of a patrol vehicle. While in custody, the man allegedly used a firearm and shot himself while still handcuffed inside the patrol car. Officers discovered him shortly afterward and he died from the gunshot wound. Authorities stated they are investigating how he had access to the weapon while detained.
