On 03/18/2026, Cedar Falls police responded to a report of a child assault at a residence in the 700 block of West Ridgeway Avenue. Officers made contact with Chad Burmahl, who came to the door holding a handgun and then retreated back inside. Officers established a perimeter and continued negotiating with him while SWAT and a drone team assisted. After a standoff, officers entered the residence and found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities identified him as Chad Burmahl.
