OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 03/19/2026, Gainesville Police Department officers responded around 10:30 p.m. to a 911 call reporting a man in a mental health crisis threatening a resident near Briarwood Drive and Skyline Drive. Dakota Levi Simmons, 24, left the initial residence and entered another nearby home. Officers encountered him inside, where he fired multiple rounds and struck an officer in the chest area of his vest. Officers opened fire and he retreated further into the home, leading to a prolonged standoff involving multiple agencies and SWAT. During the standoff, Simmons continued firing from inside the residence. On 03/20/2026, he exited the home and again fired toward officers. Officers returned fire, striking him. He was transported to a hospital where he died.
