On 03/19/2026, a New Mexico State Police officer attempted a traffic stop on a Cadillac near N Main Street and W Berrendo Road. The driver, William James Roberts, 64, continued driving and officers escalated a pursuit. The vehicle entered a trailer park and stopped at a dead end, where officers conducted a high-risk stop and ordered him out of the vehicle. During the encounter, Roberts reached inside the vehicle, exited with a handgun, and pointed it toward officers. Officers opened fire, striking him. He was transported to a hospital, where he died.
