On 03/19/2026, Selma Police Department officers responded to a report of a man in a mental health crisis in a neighborhood near an elementary school. Byron Hoover, 60, remained inside a residence and the situation escalated into a prolonged standoff lasting several hours. Officers established a perimeter and nearby schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution. During the standoff, Hoover fired a gun and struck a police officer. Officers opened fire, striking him. He was transported to a hospital, where he died. The injured officer survived.
