On 03/21/2026, Moore County deputies responded to reports of a man firing a gun at passing vehicles along N.C. Highway 24/27 near Pineywood Church Road in Cameron. A vehicle was struck by gunfire, and the driver was not injured. Deputies located the man, and during the encounter he fired shots at a responding deputy. The deputy returned fire and shot him. He died from gunshot wounds. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.
