On 03/26/2026, Eric Valencia was found unresponsive in the back seat of a parked Azusa Police Department vehicle outside the police station. The vehicle had been taken out of service for maintenance and was left unlocked. Surveillance video showed Valencia entering the vehicle on his own without police awareness. He was not in custody at the time. The rear compartment of the patrol vehicle is designed in a way that may prevent occupants from exiting from the inside once inside. His family had reported him missing prior to the discovery. Valencia had prior contact with police days earlier involving a DUI-related arrest and release. The cause of death has not been released. Authorities have opened internal and external investigations into the incident and the failure to secure the vehicle.
