On 03/27/2026, an officer attempted a traffic stop on South Main Street in Rutherfordton. The driver did not stop and police chased the vehicle. During the pursuit, the vehicle continued for approximately 1.4 miles before leaving the roadway on Coxe Road and striking a tree. A second occupant died from injuries sustained in the crash. Other occupants in the vehicle were also killed or injured. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.
