OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 03/27/2026, an officer attempted a traffic stop on South Main Street in Rutherfordton. The driver did not stop and police chased the vehicle. During the pursuit, the vehicle continued for approximately 1.4 miles before leaving the roadway on Coxe Road and striking a tree. A third occupant died from injuries sustained in the crash. Another occupant was hospitalized with serious injuries. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.
