On 03/30/2026, deputies attempted to stop a stolen U-Haul truck in San Clemente. The driver did not stop and deputies escalated a pursuit. Within about a minute, the U-Haul crashed into a Mazda SUV carrying four people. Maria Ramirezahmad, a 53-year-old woman from Anaheim, was driving the SUV and died from the impact. Three other occupants in the vehicle were hospitalized with critical injuries. The driver of the U-Haul fled on foot and was later apprehended by deputies. Authorities stated the vehicle had been reported stolen and charges include felony evasion causing death and gross vehicular manslaughter.
