On 03/31/2026, Pennsylvania State Police attempted to serve a warrant at a home in Barr Township near Nicktown. Police established a perimeter around the property. During the operation, John Rackovan III came out from a wooded area near the home holding a handgun and fired toward troopers. Troopers opened fire, striking and killing him. The Cambria County coroner identified him at the location later that evening. The Pennsylvania State Police Troop A Major Case Team is investigating the shooting.
