OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 04/02/2026, deputies from the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office, along with staff from the Kentucky Department of Community Based Services, went to a residence on KY-365 in Sturgis to serve emergency guardianship paperwork. During the encounter, police said gunfire was exchanged between deputies and 60-year-old Ronnie Phillips. Deputies opened fire, striking and killing Phillips. During the exchange, Deputy Rick Coyle was shot and airlifted to a hospital in Evansville, Indiana in critical condition. A woman inside the home was removed from the residence without reported injury. The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.
