On 04/08/2026, Los Angeles Police Department officers identified a stolen vehicle near Towne Avenue and 7th Street and attempted a traffic stop. The driver did not stop and officers chased the vehicle through downtown Los Angeles onto Interstate 5. The pursuit ended on the Olympic Boulevard off-ramp when the driver made a U-turn and crashed head-on into a patrol vehicle. After the crash, the driver exited the vehicle and fired a handgun at officers. Officers returned fire, striking him. He was pronounced dead. A passenger remained in the vehicle and was transported to a hospital.
