OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 04/09/2026, Highwood Police Department officers responded to a wellbeing check at a home in the 200 block of Morgan Place for a man reported to be intoxicated and suicidal. Officers attempted to communicate with Richard Garfinkle after he locked himself in a bathroom. Police reported he said he had a gun and then exited holding what appeared to be a pistol and pointed it toward officers. An officer opened fire, striking him. He was transported to a hospital where he died. Investigators later reported the weapon recovered was a replica pistol.
