On 04/09/2026, Tulare County Sheriff’s Office deputies went to a home near Newcomb Avenue and Grand Avenue in Porterville to serve an eviction notice. David Morales opened fire on deputies, striking a deputy. Morales remained barricaded for several hours and continued firing during a standoff involving multiple agencies. Later in the day, Morales left the residence and moved through nearby yards. Police reported he continued firing at officers. Deputies in an armored SWAT vehicle from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office drove the vehicle into Morales, killing him.
