OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 04/13/2026, Lubbock Police Department officers responded to a report of a suicidal individual at the City of Lubbock Cemetery. Officers located Steven Chad Myers sitting inside a truck and spoke with him for over 30 minutes. Police attempted to have him exit the vehicle. During the interaction, Myers reached across the truck. Officers moved to detain him, stating he was reaching for a handgun. Officers opened fire and struck him. He died from his injuries. Authorities later stated the object he reached for was a replica airsoft handgun made to resemble a real firearm.
