On 04/11/2026, Redding Police Department officers attempted to stop a vehicle near Interstate 5 and Highway 299 for suspected DUI and traffic violations. The driver did not stop, and officers escalated a pursuit. The vehicle continued northbound on Interstate 5 before turning and exiting into the city of Shasta Lake. Officers followed the vehicle to Cascade Boulevard near Shasta Dam Boulevard, where the driver stopped. He exited the vehicle holding a handgun and shot himself. He was pronounced dead after the shooting.
