OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 04/12/2026 at approximately 7:39 p.m., officers with the Christiansburg Police Department responded to the 300 block of Miller Street SE after receiving a report of a domestic dispute. Officers attempted to contact the man inside the residence, later identified as Eric H. Compton, 53. During the initial contact, Compton displayed a handgun, prompting officers to withdraw from the residence, establish a perimeter, and begin negotiations.
During the standoff, Compton exited the residence while armed. Officers attempted to negotiate and de-escalate the encounter, but Compton returned inside the home. A short time later, he exited the residence again while still carrying the handgun and advanced toward the officers. Before resorting to deadly force, officers deployed less-lethal beanbag rounds in an attempt to take him into custody. Police reported that Compton then drew his handgun, and officers fired their service weapons.
Officers immediately rendered first aid after the shooting and requested emergency medical assistance. Despite lifesaving efforts, Compton died at the scene. No officers were reported injured during the incident. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and Christiansburg EMS assisted at the scene.
