On 04/16/2026, Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputies responded after a man drove a truck through a fence on Magnolia Street near the county emergency management building and parked next to a large propane tank. The man, identified as David Ray Wyrick of Eden, North Carolina, attempted to ignite multiple propane tanks in the truck in an apparent effort to cause an explosion. Deputies responded and located him. He ran, and deputies chased him. During the encounter, deputies and Wyrick exchanged gunfire. Deputies opened fire, striking him. He died following the shooting. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.
